35. Install A Vegetative Filter - If Appropriate
	A vegetative filter provides a low-cost alternative to holding ponds on smaller operations. However, vegetative filters are much harder to design and maintain than holding ponds, and it can be difficult to ensure that the water leaving the filter is good quality. That's why some states, such as Illinois, do not allow vegetative filters on farms with over 300 animal units.
	A filter strip is not a stand-alone practice and should not be used as a substitute for other appropriate structural and management practices. It typically is used in tandem with other structures, such as temporary liquid storage and almost always a solid-removal structure such as a settling basin.
	The most effective kind of filter is a broad, flat area with little slope, surrounded on the upslope sides by a berm or dike. The earthwork required to create and maintain the slopes must be done carefully; mistakes in the earthwork are common reasons why a filter strip fails and they are the hardest problems to fix.
